Retired Members Information: Gene Therapy
Gene Therapy Program (provided by Aetna)
Your PEBTF and REHP non-Medicare retiree medical plans includes an expanded medical benefit for gene-based therapy services.
What are gene therapy services?
Genes are pieces of DNA that tell cells what to do. Sometimes, genes get damaged or do not work the right way. Gene therapy services are FDA-approved therapies that help fix these genes, offering hope for many hard-to-treat and often deadly conditions.
Though these conditions are very rare, the treatments can be very costly, so this benefit can be a lifesaver if you or a loved one ever needs it.
What is my gene therapy benefit?
The gene therapy benefit will be administered by Aetna® regardless of which medical plan you are enrolled in today.
This benefit will give you and enrolled family members access to:
- The robust nationwide Aetna Gene-based, Cellular, and Other Innovative Therapies™ (GCIT) network, which includes the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn State Hershey Medical Center
- Personalized support from a dedicated team of Aetna gene therapy care navigators to answer questions, find providers, manage claims, find and pay for travel expenses, and more
- Enhanced benefit coverage, providing 100% coverage for the gene therapy medication and services associated with the gene therapy treatment
What's next?
You do not have to do anything at this time. The PEBTF will automatically enroll you and your family in this program, so it will be ready if you need it.
What gene therapy medications are included in this benefit?
